Ken and Matt Harrison, Harrison Cattle LLC, DeSoto
The Harrison Family has been implementing Best Management Practices (BMPs) for many years. BMPs are a set of guidelines that advise producers on how to manage the water, nutrient, and pesticides they are using to reduce agriculture’s impact on the state’s natural resources. Harrison Cattle LLC conducts controlled burnings to suppress undesirable plant species and to enhance the nutritional value of the edible plants for cattle. Mr. Harrison extracts soil tests regularly and uses this information before fertilizing the land. He also uses a rotational grazing system to move cattle from pasture to pasture to manage forage and invasive weeds.
Ken and Matt Harrison are actively involved in their local community, serving as members of the Desoto Charlotte County Farm Bureau and Desoto County Cattleman’s Association. Ken Harrison is also on the Florida Farm Bureau Federation Board of Directors and the Peace River Soil and Water Conservation District board. The Harrison family is involved in the First Baptist Church of Arcadia. When asked why he is a farmer who CARES, Harrison responded, “it is important for cattlemen and agricultural producers to be recognized as good environmental stewards .”
