Haynes Williams, 101 Ranch and Haynes & Susan Williams Ranch, Okeechobee
Haynes and Susan Williams own and operate 101 Ranch and Haynes & Susan Williams Ranch in Okeechobee, Florida. The farm has been in the family for decades and was started by Mr. Haynes’ grandfather Fitzhugh Williams, in the 1940’s. They proudly produce cattle. Mr. Williams has been implementing Best Management Practices (BMPs) on the farm since 1983. BMPs are a set of guidelines that advise producers on how to manage the water, nutrient, and pesticides they are using to reduce agriculture’s impact on the state’s natural resources. 101 Ranch and Haynes & Susan Williams Ranch use a rotational grazing system to improve pasture longevity, allow more timely utilization of forage and conserve surplus forage. Solar wells have been placed throughout the pastures to supply a fresh water source for the cattle and keep them from the natural wetlands. Mr. Williams also follows many other BMPs that are suggested by the Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services (FDACS).
The Williams’ are actively involved in their local community. Mr. Williams is a member of the Cattlemen’s Association, Farm Bureau and the Masonic Lodge. When asked why he is a farmer who CARES, Williams responded, “we want to protect the environment for the future use and enjoyment of generations to come.”
