David Clegg, Clegg Sod Farm, Flagler

David and Wanda Clegg own and operate Clegg Sod Farm Inc. in Flagler County. The 3rd generation farm started in 1916 as a cabbage farm. Since then, the property has expanded to include production of hay and sod, as well as raising Brangus cattle. Clegg Sod Farm Inc. is a family-run business with all members of the family having an active role in the prosperity of the farm. Clegg Sod Farm Inc. has implemented BMPS for the past 4 years. BMPs are a set of guidelines that advise producers on how to manage the water, nutrient, and pesticides they are using to reduce agriculture’s impact on the state’s natural resources. Some of the BMPs that have been implemented include high efficiency overhead irrigation, land leveling, cover crops, prescribed fertigation, cross fencing, precision soil testing, GPS guided fertilization and pesticide application. These practices ensure that their land will remain productive and viable for future generations.

Clegg is active in his local community as a member of the Seville United Methodist Church, Flagler County Cattlemen’s Association, Florida Farm Bureau, Flagler County EODC, and the Florida Farm Bureau. Clegg is also a chairman for the Helping Hands Food Pantry. When asked what he enjoys most about farming, Clegg responded, “Family! There is nothing better than having the pleasure of watching our children and now our grandchildren grow on the farm. Our two adult children are currently fully employed by the farm. Our hopes are that our grandchildren will someday share our passion for the land and for our role in Florida’s agriculture industry.”
