David and Pam Williams, David H. Williams Ranch, Okeechobee

David Williams and his family own and operate David H. Williams Ranch in Okeechobee, Florida. Mr. Williams started the farm in 1986. They proudly produce cattle. Mr. Williams has been implementing Best Management Practices (BMPs) on the farm since 1986. BMPs are a set of guidelines that advise producers on how to manage the water, nutrient, and pesticides they are using to reduce agriculture’s impact on the state’s natural resources. David H. Williams Ranch uses cross fences to help with rotational grazing of the cattle. This grazing system is used to improve pasture longevity, allow more timely utilization of forage, conserve the surplus of forage and increase the stocking rate. Mr. Williams takes annual soil samples to ensure the precise amount of lime and/or fertilizer is applied. He also uses a solar well to pump fresh water to the cattle. Having a fresh water source keeps the cattle from disturbing natural wetlands and reduces nonpoint source pollution.

Mr. Williams is actively involved in his local community, serving as a Farm Bureau member and a School Board member in Okeechobee County. He is also a member of the Florida and Okeechobee County Cattlemen’s Association. When asked why he is a farmer who CARES, Williams responded, “for future generations.”
