Damon Deas, Deas Brothers Farm, Hamilton
Damon Deas and his family own and operate Deas Brothers Farm in Jennings, Florida. The farm has been in the family for over 80 years and was started by Damon and Roger’s grandfather in the1920’s. They proudly produce cattle, corn, peanuts, and tobacco. The Deas Family has been implementing Best Management Practices (BMPs) on the farm for decades. BMPs are a set of guidelines that advise producers on how to manage the water, nutrient, and pesticides they are using to reduce agriculture’s impact on the state’s natural resources. Deas Brothers Farm Inc. has utilized a Global Positioning System (GPS) to guide certain equipment on the farm. Soil sampling is done year round to determine the precise amount of fertilize and water to apply to the crop. The Deas Family has also changed all the center pivot irrigation systems to a low volume output to conserve water. Fencing off wetlands, creating a fresh water source for cattle and working closely with the Suwannee River Water Management District are a few more examples of how the Deas Family is contributing to the environment.
Serving as a local School Board Member for nearly ten years and serving as president of the Hamilton County Farm Bureau, Mr. Deas is actively involved in his local community. Mr. Damon also served on the Tobacco Advisory Committee for the Farm Bureau and was a member of the Hamilton County Cattlemen’s Association. The Deas family are active members of their local church When asked why he is a farmer who CARES, Damon responded, “Our land must be passed down to our children so farming can continue to be the most important industry in this great nation.”
